Electronic music-making tools offer a wide range of creative possibilities and can have many functions. However, these tools are often hard to understand for beginners due to their complexity, discouraging them from starting. Designing interactions and interfaces differently can address this; strong-specific, tangible, and embodied interactions have the possibility to explain functionality through form. The goal of this project was to create an enjoyable electronic music-making experience with a low entry barrier. The experience needed to be easy to use and understandable regardless of prior musical experience, while having enough functions available to experiment freely with sounds and music creation.
The end result is Soundsnip, an electronic music instrument that anyone can use to create music in a fun way. Use the 'recorder' device to record any sound snippet to a block, this sound can then be manipulated as you wish. After recording a variety of sounds, the blocks can be placed on the 'sequencer' device to create melodies and rhythms in a simple way from your recordings.
